Realist school

Ukrainian Realist school was initialized at the beginning of the XX century, at first being only the branch of Russian Academic school of Petersburg, but then by leaps and bounds acquiring its own inimitable features.

It became the complex alloy of composition decisions formed under the influence of Russian Peredvizhnik, Modern and Symbolism trends, with the coloristic attainments of French Impressionism, developed in abundant atmosphere of the picturesque Ukrainian environment.

Impressionist style

The impressionist nature and prominent decorativeness, inherent to the Ukrainian painting of the XX century, built on clear prevalence color and tone base over the light, nearly fleeting use of the linear drawing, have made it such popular amongst the contemporary collectors and connoisseurs of art from all over the world. Color researches and achievements of French Impressionism were rejected and forgotten soon in West Europe and America, remaining creative landmarks for the Ukrainian artists during the whole XX century.

Developing their own vision of nature many of the Ukrainian authors reach the skills of the highest level that, certainly, ranks them with the worldwide known and honoured artists. And presently it returns an understanding of color integrity and subtle lyrical perception inherent to the soul of an Ukrainian artist.

Contemporary Art

Many interesting things occur in creative searching of the contemporary artists. Some authors work in a traditional realist way, developing their artistic skill in the field of nearly photographic representation of nature details. The others, in opposite, are engaged in searching of abstract decisions and composition structures in planes.

In present time the use of computer possibilities and mixed graphic techniques plays more and more active role for the contemporary art, in accordance with the utilization of the latest artistic materials. Art works of the contemporary Ukrainian artists, certainly, demonstrate high level of professionalism and skills, declaring about creative potential and exceptional talent of their authors.

"Expression, to my way of thinking, does not consist of the passions mirrored upon a human face or betrayed by a violent gesture. The whole arrangement of my picture is expression. The place occupied by figures or objects, the empty spaces around them, the proportions – everything plays a part. Composition is the art of arranging in a decorative manner the various elements at the painter's disposal for the expression of his feelings. In a picture every part will be visible and will play the role conferred upon it, be it principal or secondary. All that is not useful in the picture is detrimental."    Henri Matisse.
