National Art Museum

The National Art Museum was opened in 1899 as Museum of antiquities and fine arts. The building of museum was built in the neoclassical style by the architect G. Boitsov with participation of the architect V. Gorodetsky. The construction of museum and forming of the initial collection was organized basically by efforts of well known Kiev mezens such as Tereschenko and Khanenko. After the revolution of 1917 the number of masterpieces in the museum increased manifolds due to nationalization of many private art collections, and purpose financing from state funds helped to replenish the collection. Now, the National Art Museum represents wide picture of national artistic culture. The exposition is placed in two storeys of the building and arranged according to historical and chronological principle. It gives fair idea of development of Ukrainian art from ancient times to our days.

Kiev Museum of Russian Art was opened in 1922 as city art gallery. The core of museum's fund formed by art collections belonging to the family of famous Kiev industrialists Tereschenko. Initial exposition numbered around 200 artworks, and now it needs more then 30 halls to be placed. Being arranged in historical and chronological order, the collection represents almost every main stage in development of Russian painting, spanning the time from the XII century to our days. Visitors can get acquainted with ancient Russian icon painting, portrait art of the XVIII century, rich collection of pictures dating back to the second half of XIX century, masterpieces by Peredvizhniki, art of modern and symbolism, artworks of the period of revolution and construction of socialism. Kiev Museum of Russian Art is proud of masterworks by outstanding artists without which one can hardly get full idea of their creative work. In the museum one can find many masterpieces that went down in the history of world art.

Kiev Museum of Western
and Oriental Art

Museum of Art named after Bogdan and Varvara Khanenko was founded in 1919 on the basis of their private museum. Now, it keeps one of the best collections of foreign art in Ukraine. From 1919 the number of exhibits has been more then 13 times increased – from 1250 to nearly 17000 artworks, with 2000 pieces exposed in museum halls. Visitors can view many remarkable samples of foreign art: Ancient Greek, Roman, Italian, French, Spanish, Flemish, Dutch, Japanese, Chinese, Persian, Turkish, Egyptian, etc. Although the collection covers a wide range of countries, it does not claim to complete representation of periods and styles of the foreign art and creative manners of foreign artist. It is not the number of art pieces, but unique nature of many of them that makes Kiev Museum of Western and Oriental Art famous not only in Ukraine, but far abroad.
